Guilt feeling isn't bad is it ? it is a good warning signal that we may be on the wrong track and helps us reflect on our actions whatever the conclusion we draw from this reflection.

Well, Middlechild, I have smoked very little, it is a long time back, and I've not experienced harmful effects, lucky me. I just read papers. For instance, there was an article in last mach issue of The Independent (UK), a paper which advocated legalization of marijuana in 1997 and now aknowledges that a strong variety of it, skunk, causes an increasing number of mental disorders, especially within the adolescent population.

Insomniac, Eclipse,
I'm sorry to bring contradiction but it seems that marijuana does impair brain cells according to the most recent reseach work. People who 30 years ago used to advocate it as innocuous are now changing their mind, some doctors say it, too, has to do with schizophrenia. Isn't it too high a price to pay for a youth ?

I wonder, is smoking act normally or is it playing into the hands of tobacco firms ? I used to be a smoker and I feel more normal now, having plain control of my life. What I'm saying is worth just as a personal opinion, I would think the same even if I weren't (still) a JW, provided of course I wouln't be hooked on to the point that I couldn't even choose to stop smoking. I'm grateful to JWs they showed me 30 years ago what the Bible tells about not defiling our body, that probably saved my life. In another way (no religion there), I tell my children that no smoking conveys the message that they resist peer pressure and that's to be valued when teenagers are shaping their personality.

Narkissos,
I agree very much with you about southern cheap decent french wines because a marked effort has been made to improve them in the last 30 years, growers must just keep doing so to match the taste of the new generations who otherwise will turn to other mediterranean wines. I prefer Aquitaine wines to Languedoc, but it could be just for cultural reasons and also because some doctors reckon they are better for health.

Mis,
I shouldn't say that and french growers will hate me but it seems that you can, now, turn safely to californian wine since last year, under a blind test, highest ranking and most expensive french bordeaux ranked only third after californian red wines. I enjoy southern Europe wines (Italy, Spain, Portugal) and like trying non european ones, from north africa (under french rule, algerian wine used to be mixed with southern french one to improve it), Chile, South Africa, etc. French growers must lower their prices and eliminate mediocre wines (some years, beaujolais nouveaux used to be awful, not in the last few years, fortunately) if they want to stay in the forefront of international competition. And we've not seen the Chinese yet, they are currently hiring french professionals.

I mostly drink red wine from the south-west of France. Owing to the american influence and necessities of international market, we tend, slowly, to name wine after the vine (cabernet, merlot, etc), which really doesn't mean much because you can find these vines in very different soils and taste results very much from the latter, we still stronly stick to their geographical origin : Gaillac, St Emilion, Cahors, Bergerac, etc.

I suggest as french equivalent :
can't believe it's not vinegar : piquette
big red gulp : gros rouge qui tache (staining rough red)
possible other ones : bibine, vinasse, chasse-cousin (more historical, used in Napoleon army), pisse d'âne (donkey's piss) but we, too, say cat's piss (pisse de chat), pousse-au-crime (crime incitative)
